Dr. Alister McGrath--Christian Apologetics: An Introduction--Why Believe in God?
Thursday Oct 10, 2024
Thursday Oct 10, 2024
With three doctorates from Oxford and over 50 books to his credit, Dr. Alister McGrath is well-equipped to discuss apologetics including core elements, the inference to the best explanation, Dawkins' demand for a proof, and points of contact including a sense of longing, the beauty of the world, the ordering of nature, a sense of wonder, a sense of moral obligation, existential anxiety, and the fine tuning of the universe. He then covers narrative apologetics, enlightenment rationalism, the alleged incompatibility of science and religion, and materialist reductionism. McGrath also considers several Christian thinkers including Chesterton, Lewis, Sayers, Schaffer, and Taylor. We finish up with a look at creation and evolution.

Historical orthodoxy has it that Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer participated in some way at some level in a plot to assassinate Hitler. Dr. Mark Thiessen challenges this reading of history, arguing that Bonhoeffer maintained his pacifism till the end. Dr. Nation considers the views of other Bonhoeffer scholars, the biographical work of Eberhard Bethge, the writings of Bonhoeffer, and the thoughts of others who knew Bonhoeffer. We finally consider the ethical implications of this issue for the church today.

Dr. Joshua Rasmussen discusses various lines of thought related to understanding the nature and origin of the human person. We look at inquiry in terms of introspection, reason, and the scientific method as well as feelings according to eliminativism, reductionism, non-reductive materialism, and the something more view. We next consider thought in relation to the aspects of aboutness, structure, truth-value, logical linkability, and counting arguments. Dr. Rasmussen then explores five theories of perception (direct realism, phenomenalism, intentional theory, representationalism, window theory) and the will, freedom, determinism, and compatibilism. We next tackle the value of the individual, intrinsic value, the value puzzle, the mind-body problem, epiphenomenalism, dualistic interactionism, the conscious substance theory, the self, oneness, point of view, and self-awareness. We move on to the origins of persons, the construction problem, mind-making, the binding problem, the unity of a conscious self, three views of identity (body, psychological, soul) dichotomist and trichotomist views, and the prior identity hypothesis. Dr. Rasmussen discusses the emergence of consciousness in terms of strong emergence, incongruent emergence, and substance emergence. Finally, Dr. Rasmussen answers the question, 'how could a first-person conscious substance come to exist?'

THE CHARGE with Dennis Metzler
THE CHARGE promotes meaningful conversation about theology, spirituality, biblical study, and ethics--relating it to all areas of human endeavor.
Church renewal is at the core for me and I believe it comes through:
-intentionally living as family in committed community—without becoming a cult
-teaching sound doctrine and theology—without committing bibliolatry
-witnessing to the gospel and expecting healing, signs, and wonders—without going obnoxiously overboard
-practicing God’s peace, justice, and stewardship—without becoming Marxists
-pursuing Christlikeness through disciplines of prayer, worship, and study—without becoming self-help individualists
---and all this through a vigorous and zealous--yet Sabbath grounded--abandonment to Jesus
I live in Portland, Oregon, am retired, have two adult children, am part of a Vineyard Church, live in and run a discipleship house, graduated with an M. Div from Portland Seminary, & play jazz sax and piano.
I would love to hear from you so please send me an email. thecharge.info@gmail.com
