Saturday Nov 19, 2022
Saturday Nov 19, 2022
I cover several theological themes that are key to understanding 1 Peter and quote heavily from noteworthy 1 Peter scholars. We first consider pastoral theology, the Trinity, patriology, Christology, pneumatology, and soteriology. Next, we look at 1 Peter's theology in terms of ecclesiology, ethics, the church's relation to the world, theology of suffering, and eschatology. Finally, we discuss how 1 Peter comments on hope, the relationship of 1 Peter to the OT, and the epistle's relationship to the NT as a whole.

Saturday Nov 12, 2022
Saturday Nov 12, 2022
Dennis Metzler reveals how early Pentecostals opposed war, in this particular case, World War I. Early Pentecostal pastor A.M. Kiergan rails against war, expressing his convictions that Christians cannot both follow Christ and fight in war. Kiergan's writing is included in Jay Beaman and Brian K. Pipkin's book, "Pentecostal and Holiness Statements on War and Peace", published by Wipf and Stock in 2013. Frank Bartelman was a well-known participant in the earliest days of the Pentecostal movement--starting with the Azusa Street Revival. I read from and comment on his writing, "Christian Citizenship", which expresses his views on the incompatibility of Christian discipleship and warfare. Bartelman's work was included in "Pentecostal and Holiness Statements on War and Peace" by Jay Beaman and Brian K. Pipkin, published by Pickwick (Wipf & Stock) in 2013. Preeminent Old Testament scholar John Walton of Wheaton College leads us through some of the most challenging and misunderstood material in the Scriptures. He makes a case for the primacy of order in the beginning of Genesis as well as seeing Adam and Eve as both archetypal and historical. We take a look at the identity of the serpent, how to understand the knowledge of good and evil, details about the temptation, humanity being naked and hiding, the nature of the curse, and the banishment. His conclusions are sometimes surprising and always insightful. Enjoy the interview! War and Pacifism--Early Holiness Teaching--Thomas C. Upham
Saturday Nov 12, 2022
Saturday Nov 12, 2022
Dennis Metzler looks into the work of early Holiness movement writer and forerunner of American psychology, Thomas C. Upham. Metzler comments on Upham's rigorous stance on pacifism from a biblical perspective. Upham's main contention is that militarists will use the smokescreen of just war theory to promote any and every war to the public and especially to the church. Upham's writing "1842" is taken from "Pentecostal and Holiness Statements on War and Peace" by Jay Beaman and Brian K. Pipkin, published by Pickwick (Wipf & Stock) in 2013. Check it out by following this link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FBEQ8G0/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 Intro and outro music is from the Alan Jones Sextet album "Unsafe", available from Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Unsafe-Alan-Jones-Sextet/dp/B0006A9GSQ. Vanier on Communion with the Intellectually Disabled
Saturday Nov 12, 2022
Saturday Nov 12, 2022
Dennis Metzler considers what Jean Vanier has to say about ministering to people with intellectual disabilities. Even more, Vanier says that what is most important is having communion with others in the deepest relational sense. The text examined is taken from Vanier's "Brokenness and Community" which became a chapter entitled "Communion" in the anthology, "Called To Community". In spite of Jean Vanier's significant moral failures and the damage he inflicted on others, his work and writings are nevertheless exemplary. Intro and outro music is from the Alan Jones Sextet album "Unsafe", available from Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Unsafe-Alan-Jones-Sextet/dp/B0006A9GSQ. It is used by permission. Video recorded at On Earth Studios, Portland, Oregon.

Today we take a look at the thought of Stanley Hauerwas on peace, violence, non-violence, and peacemaking. Dr. Nathan Hosler, Director of the Church of the Brethren’s Office of Peacebuilding and Policy is the author of "Hauerwas the Peacemaker?: Peacebuilding, Race, and Foreign Policy". Hosler examines the biblical background related to peace and peacemaking and then explains the three theological pillars that are critical to Hauerwas’ thought: Christocentrism, the church and its practices, and the centrality of non-violence. We discuss how virtue, character, and narrative form believers in their vocation of peacemaking and consider Hauerwas on ecumenism. Hosler offers more in depth thought on Hauerwas’ approach to race, peacemaking, and foreign policy. I would love to hear from you. In "Life Together", Dietrich Bonhoeffer looks at idealism, dreamers, and visionaries, particularly in the way they affect relationships in close-knit Christian communities. Dennis Metzler offers commentary on Bonhoeffer's writing from "Life Together", which is reproduced as a chapter entitled, "Idealism" in the collection, "Called To Community".

THE CHARGE with Dennis Metzler
THE CHARGE promotes meaningful conversation about theology, spirituality, biblical study, and ethics--relating it to all areas of human endeavor.
Church renewal is at the core for me and I believe it comes through:
-intentionally living as family in committed community—without becoming a cult
-teaching sound doctrine and theology—without committing bibliolatry
-witnessing to the gospel and expecting healing, signs, and wonders—without going obnoxiously overboard
-practicing God’s peace, justice, and stewardship—without becoming Marxists
-pursuing Christlikeness through disciplines of prayer, worship, and study—without becoming self-help individualists
---and all this through a vigorous and zealous--yet Sabbath grounded--abandonment to Jesus
I live in Portland, Oregon, am retired, have two adult children, am part of a Vineyard Church, live in and run a discipleship house, graduated with an M. Div from Portland Seminary, & play jazz sax and piano.
