In this interview, based on Matthew Lundberg's "Christian Martyrdom and Christian Violence: On Suffering and Wielding the Sword", the strengths and weaknesses of both just war and pacifism are considered along with their biblical and theological foundations and logic, especially as they relate to Christian martyrdom. We look at the criteria for martyrdom, martyrdom of confession and action, the early church and other pacifistic traditions, restraining the necessities of realism, Augustine, Neibuhr, and Bonhoeffer, and especially Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount and the kingdom of God.

Douglas Harink shares insights from his book entitled "Resurrecting Justice: Reading Romans for the Life of the World". He sees the traditional rendering of "righteousness" in the Book of Romans as "justice". This provides a contrast to traditional perspectives that focus only on justification by faith for individuals. Harink covers personal as well as systemic sin, Adam and Christ, weak law and sovereign law, obedience to God, ultimate and cosmic justice, just war, Israel and the church, messianic patience and solidarity, messianic public service, political authorities, and more.
Dr. Douglas Harink is Emeritus Professor of Theology at The King's University in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Apostle Paul knew well how to live in contentment in all situations, no matter how much he suffered. He continually experienced the strength that comes through a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. Through faith, discipline, and boldly meeting life head-on we can experience this same reality.

The Resurrection and Theology with Dr. Ross Hastings: A Biblical Exploration
Monday Apr 24, 2023
Monday Apr 24, 2023
Ross Hastings is Professor of Theology at Regent College and holds PhDs in both theology and chemistry. In this interview we cover the historical basis for the resurrection of Christ, the resurrection's relationship to atonement (especially recapitulation and Christus Victor), regeneration, justification, and the personal history of Jesus. We look at progressive sanctification, union with Christ, theosis, and mission/vocation, all in light of the resurrection. Hastings comments on the future of Christians after death, Christ as Great High Priest, worship, and preaching in regard to the resurrection. Finally, we examine the implications of the resurrection for creation, ethics, and the second coming.

THE CHARGE with Dennis Metzler
THE CHARGE promotes meaningful conversation about theology, spirituality, biblical study, and ethics--relating it to all areas of human endeavor.
Church renewal is at the core for me and I believe it comes through:
-intentionally living as family in committed community—without becoming a cult
-teaching sound doctrine and theology—without committing bibliolatry
-witnessing to the gospel and expecting healing, signs, and wonders—without going obnoxiously overboard
-practicing God’s peace, justice, and stewardship—without becoming Marxists
-pursuing Christlikeness through disciplines of prayer, worship, and study—without becoming self-help individualists
---and all this through a vigorous and zealous--yet Sabbath grounded--abandonment to Jesus
I live in Portland, Oregon, am retired, have two adult children, am part of a Vineyard Church, live in and run a discipleship house, graduated with an M. Div from Portland Seminary, & play jazz sax and piano.
I would love to hear from you so please send me an email. thecharge.info@gmail.com
