We first consider pastoral theology, the Trinity, patriology, Christology, pneumatology, and soteriology. Next, we look at 1 Peter's theology in terms of ecclesiology, ethics, the church's relation to the world, theology of suffering, and eschatology. Finally, we discuss how 1 Peter comments on hope, the relationship of 1 Peter to the OT, and the epistle's relationship to the NT as a whole.

Dennis Metzler reveals how early Pentecostals opposed war, in this particular case, World War I. Early Pentecostal pastor A.M. Kiergan rails against war, expressing his convictions that Christians cannot both follow Christ and fight in war. Kiergan's writing is included in Jay Beaman and Brian K. Pipkin's book, "Pentecostal and Holiness Statements on War and Peace", published by Wipf and Stock in 2013. I read from and comment on his writing, "Christian Citizenship", which expresses his views on the incompatibility of Christian discipleship and warfare. Preeminent Old Testament scholar John Walton of Wheaton College leads us through some of the most challenging and misunderstood material in the Scriptures. He makes a case for the primacy of order in the beginning of Genesis as well as seeing Adam and Eve as both archetypal and historical. We take a look at the identity of the serpent, how to understand the knowledge of good and evil, details about the temptation, humanity being naked and hiding, the nature of the curse, and the banishment. His conclusions are sometimes surprising and always insightful. Enjoy the interview! THE CHARGE with Dennis Metzler
THE CHARGE promotes meaningful conversation about theology, spirituality, biblical study, and ethics--relating it to all areas of human endeavor.
Church renewal is at the core for me and I believe it comes through:
-intentionally living as family in committed community—without becoming a cult
-teaching sound doctrine and theology—without committing bibliolatry
-witnessing to the gospel and expecting healing, signs, and wonders—without going obnoxiously overboard
-practicing God’s peace, justice, and stewardship—without becoming Marxists
-pursuing Christlikeness through disciplines of prayer, worship, and study—without becoming self-help individualists
---and all this through a vigorous and zealous--yet Sabbath grounded--abandonment to Jesus
I live in Portland, Oregon, am retired, have two adult children, am part of a Vineyard Church, live in and run a discipleship house, graduated with an M. Div from Portland Seminary, & play jazz sax and piano.
