We also consider 'equality of opportunity' vs. 'equity of outcome' in the marketplace, the complementarian/egalitarian debate along with the related controversial scriptures, and how feminism can possibly hurt men and women. General Revelation: Expanding Our Theology with Dr. Robert K. Johnston
Monday Apr 24, 2023
Monday Apr 24, 2023
Our approach to general revelation needs to take us beyond simply recognizing through the created order that humanity is sinful and that God does exist--as essential as that is. Dr. Robert K. Johnston leads us in exploring the variety of ways that God graciously reveals himself, his truth, and his ways--even through film. Dr. Johnston is Senior Professor of Theology and Culture at Fuller Theological Seminary and has authored many books including "God's Wider Presence: Reconsidering General Revelation" which brings together historical, biblical, and contemporary examples and provides a significant contribution to a wide range of discussions about discerning the divine throughout the world. Mark A. Jennings explores the rich and encouraging epistle to the Philippians under the overarching theme of partnership in the apostle Paul's gospel. He uses Ben Witherington's schema for organizing the letter according to ancient rhetorical structure and sees themes of fellowship, Paul's rivals, and money as essential to understanding the epistle. The rhetorical structure proceeds as follows: Exordium 1:1-11 Narratio 1:12-26 Propositio 1:27-30 Probatio 2:1-4:3 Peroratio 4:4-9 Concluding arguments/denouement 4:10-20 Enjoy the interview!

God and the Brain: The Rationality of Belief with Dr. Kelly James Clark
Monday Apr 24, 2023
Monday Apr 24, 2023
Dr. Clark discusses cognitive science of religion, theory of mind, agency detecting devices, and materialist arguments against the existence of God. We consider religion as a natural phenomenon, the nature of rationality, and resisting the demand for evidence. Clark looks at intuition and inference, the God faculty, the relationship between naturalism and evolution, and the assertion that atheists have higher IQs than theists. Finally, we examine conformity bias, Google’s search engine and human minds, and brain science’s relationship to apologetics. Dr. Kelly James Clark is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul, Turkey.

Mitzi Smith gives us some background on womanist thought, key thinkers, and its relationship with theology and biblical interpretation. We cover the raison d'etre of womanism, potential compatibility for Black conservative evangelical women, and its relevance to White men. Dr. Smith then explores the relationship of exegesis and eisegesis and the multi-faceted role of the womanist biblical scholar. Mitzi Smith examines six biblical scenarios and relates each of them to a contemporary justice concern: the New Testament's portrayal of women as virgins and whore, Matthew's Great Commission and social justice teaching, the Samaritan woman at the well and access to safe water, the Syro-Phonecian woman and intersectionality, the Ethiopian eunuch, Apollos, and the subordinated other, and Elisha, boys, bears, and police brutality. Finally, we look at the ways womanist thought can be applied to the life and mission of the church.

We investigate the questions of author, date, occasion, genre, structure, themes, and historicity of Samuel 1 and 2. Dr. Evans considers the theology of Samuel through six topics: fulfillment of the prophetic word, trust in God, seriousness of sin, importance of true repentance, Davidic covenant, and the Anointed One. The life and influence of Samuel is discussed as is the whole issue of kingship. Evans also considers the rise and fall of Saul as well as key incidents in the career of David.

Dr. Storms covers the nature and purpose of spiritual gifts, how we receive the gifts, and human agency and authority in exercising the gifts. As a Reformed charismatic theologian, he discusses the relationship the Reformed church has had with the spiritual gifts and cessationism as well as his own relationship with cessationists and the future of cessationism. Storms dives into different approaches to words of knowledge and words of wisdom and takes a peak at Spurgeon's experience of words of knowledge. We look at the nature and purpose of prophecy and consider the difference between OT and NT prophecy and the relationship of the priesthood to prophecy. Dr. Storms examines Paul's journey to Jerusalem in Acts, exploring contrary interpretations of prophecy within the text. We take a look at the discernment of spirits, healing, the gift of faith, and apostleship--both biblically and in the church today. Finally, Storms covers the phenomena of supernatural gifts in non-Christians and the current state of the charismatic renewal movement.

THE CHARGE with Dennis Metzler
THE CHARGE promotes meaningful conversation about theology, spirituality, biblical study, and ethics--relating it to all areas of human endeavor.
Church renewal is at the core for me and I believe it comes through:
-intentionally living as family in committed community—without becoming a cult
-teaching sound doctrine and theology—without committing bibliolatry
-witnessing to the gospel and expecting healing, signs, and wonders—without going obnoxiously overboard
-practicing God’s peace, justice, and stewardship—without becoming Marxists
-pursuing Christlikeness through disciplines of prayer, worship, and study—without becoming self-help individualists
---and all this through a vigorous and zealous--yet Sabbath grounded--abandonment to Jesus
I live in Portland, Oregon, am retired, have two adult children, am part of a Vineyard Church, live in and run a discipleship house, graduated with an M. Div from Portland Seminary, & play jazz sax and piano.
